The sport of triathlon has taught me many things, but perhaps most important of all is that it has taught me to choose to be happy, and I truly believe that happiness stems from embodying what we are passionate about. I found the sport of triathlon, and it changed my world. I am incredibly passionate about this sport, even though I have only been seriously involved with it for a little over 18 months. It brings a level of excitement and joy into my life that is unparalleled. It forces me to grow not only as an athlete, but as a person. It has tested me mentally and physically in ways that nothing else in my life can, and for this, I am a better person.
I believe that everyone has a passion, something that ignites a fire in their soul that just can’t be replicated with anything else in their life. It is different for everyone. Some people get lucky and are truly passionate about the work that they do for a living. Others pursue their passions outside of work. Some people realize their passion early on in their life, while for others it takes years of searching. Regardless of life circumstances, I wholeheartedly believe that embracing what we are passionate about, or continuing to search for it, is one of the greatest gifts we can give to ourselves.
Embodying what we are passionate about and chasing it on a daily basis has a ripple effect on other areas in our life, at least this is what I have personally experienced. I love what I study in Graduate School and I love the work that I am currently doing, but the sport of triathlon just “clicks” with me like nothing else ever has. This is how I know that I have found something that I am passionate about. I look forward to pursuing this passion every day, and just the pursuit, the journey, that triathlon takes me on, enhances other aspects of my life. I learn lessons that make me a better student, a better son and brother, and a better human. I see the improvements in my day-to-day life, and it’s the most satisfying and rewarding experience that I could ever hope for.
I will never be a perfect person and I will surely always be chasing my full potential as a human being, but choosing to embody what I am passionate about and integrating it into my daily life will propel me on a path towards realizing my potential. This excites me more than anything else that I can think of.
